ZIMBABWE

ZIMBABWE

The world's largest waterfall and a coup!

"Hyperinflation, hunger, and human rights abuses make Zimbabwe high on the world misery index. The country is a byproduct of contemporary corruption. British colonialism and its subsequent apartheid system allowed a white minority to rule until the 1980s. Robert Mugabe was originally a freedom fighter. Over time he fell victim to autocratic corruption that enriched his cronies and left millions of ordinary citizens to suffer. I was under no illusions when I booked the trip that things would remain peachy. On my first walk through Victoria Falls, a young man offered to sell me “funny money”—old Zimbabwean $100 trillion bills, relics of terribly high inflation."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Victoria Falls
See Victoria Falls, largest waterfall in the world depending on how you count.
See the Victoria Falls Steam Train.
Keeping my cool while a coup unfolded in the capital of Harare.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

Speaking for Victoria Falls only, as I couldn't go to Harare due to conflict, it was quite manageable. Though there was a power outage at the tourist office. Research the climate on the ground before any trip.

The power of Victoria Falls is a standstill demonstration of the pack of nature's punch. There's nothing like it anywhere.
