HONG KONG

HONG KONG

(Special Administrative Region of China)

The delicate dance of being a world hub

And preserving just enough autonomy

"I spent four days riding outdoor escalators up hills and getting lost in underground air conditioned malls that were so gaudy a Saudi Arabian prince would have felt understated. On the street and below the surface I watched sharp-elbowed, sharp-eyed and sharply dressed men and women of the world feel, look and act important. Everyone saw through you and spoke the same language—money. As a city it was too claustrophobic to really enjoy. Between the omnipresent feeling that you could be squashed like a roach and kicked down the drain under the humid gray rainy sky—the place did not register with me."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Hong Kong
See the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery
Take an early evening cocktail sail in a junk boat
Find the statue of Bruce Lee
Observing the dedication and discipline of the local workforce. Everybody gave all, all the time. Unlike anywhere I've ever been.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

The visa process to visit Hong Kong is significantly easier than China. It remains a global hub for trade and an incredibly important city in Asia. Civil unrest due to protests re China's control can occur, research ahead of time to see and read the room.

For many the city is a thrill--it makes, it moves, it matters. That being said, it's hard to catch your breath. Some like that, they should experience it in Hong Kong.
