EASTER ISLAND

EASTER ISLAND (TERRITORY OF CHILE)

The most remote inhabited place on earth

"The graveyard sits on the edge of the cliff. Sea spray touches the tombstones with a strong wind. The four of us perch ourselves on a hill with a view of the pink light rolling behind the elevated Moai on the cliff’s edge. Sipping beer, staring out to the sea as the light slides down the face of the Moai, I see the sun reflected in Sofia’s eyes before she nuzzles herself under my chin. I feel that if God were to strike me down at this very moment, put me six feet under in the graveyard behind me, well, I would be going out on top."
--Look For Me There, Chapter 9

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Hanga Roa and beyond
See the Moai, the mysterious giant stone carved heads.
Sun bathe at Ovahe Beach.
Drive the cliffs and watch the horses feed alongside the road next to the sea.
The power of aloneness on this tiny little island. So far out to sea, so far away from civilization. Blissful.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

More hotels have popped up in recent years and it has become more commercialized. Best to rent a car when there.

The most enchanting place I visited. It's cliche but words don't do it much justice. Escape there, find a nook and journal your heart out.
