SOUTH KOREA

SOUTH KOREA

Born out of an American war that Americans forget,

rich culture now vying for tech hub of Asia.

"Like any proper Asian megacity, Seoul, population of 10 million, is broken up into various unique neighborhoods easily accessible by an efficient and timely public transit system. Traffic is ludicrous but it does not matter because the trains run on time. Since American soldiers have been in country for 70 years, most every local knows some English. There are quite a few perfect or near perfect English speakers. Much more so than in Tokyo or Beijing. I assumed this would make conversation at bars and restaurants pretty commonplace. I was wrong, The people of Seoul were rather direct and abrasive with little time for small talk. I didn’t mind this because the it meant service was quick and reliable. The locals wanted to get to the point, everything else was superfluous."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Seoul
Grab dinner in the Hongdae neighborhood then watch Kpop dance offs in the streets.
Visit an animal cafe and take a picture with a raccoon.
Observe the rich history at the Gyeongbokgung palace.
Eat everything!
Beating a South Korea soldier in a BB gun shooting game at an arcade. The bet was for a pitcher of beer.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

1/5  EASY

Safe, great transportation, accommodating people. PERFECT for solo travel.

Wish more Americans remembered the Korean War. The vibrant culture of Seoul lends credence to the notion that the war was not in vain. People are free and the technology they produce is guiding the world.
