MALAYSIA

MALAYSIA

Two distinct cultures dominate in one unique country

-Malay & Malaysian Chinese.

"The exception to the blandness I felt defined Kuala Lumpur was the Merdeka Square. The Independence Square of the city, it emanated out from the stately Sultan Abdul Samad building, built by the British in the late 1890s as their government offices. With its pinkish orange color, intricate archways and dark red cupolas it had a presence, especially compared to the new age buildings that had sprouted up behind it. When I visited, there was a Malaysian biker rally happening on the parade grounds. Women in tight leather pants and hijabs, revving Harleys and smoking cigarettes. Heavy metal cover bands jammed on a stage behind a row of biker inspired merchandise tables. I wondered where I could find more of this Malaysia, I suspected it wasn’t in Kuala Lumpur."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Kuala Lumpur
Visit the iconic Petronas Towers.
Have a late night drink on the Changkat in Bukit Bintang.
Eat rice dishes bathed in coconut milk.
Meeting an Aussie couple at a bar fashioned out of an old helicopter landing pad that claimed their palm oil was environmentally friendly.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

Easy to get to, not much in the way of tourist activities as it's more of a business hub. Often used as a stopover, worth exploring though.

Fascinating melting pot of a place, renown for its Islamic banking sector. More folks there for business than fun, but the food is good enough to justify a weekend.
