GHANA

For many Americans, a welcome first stop in Africa.

Ghana is prepared to be hospitable and historical.

"The ground shook, I thought it was the force of the waves. I turned around to see a young boy, furiously riding his horse through the compact wet sand. He wizzed right by me. Twenty yards later he got the horse to stop. They trotted back. He asked if I wanted a ride, fair price. 'Don't think I'll fit.' I said. He laughed. 'You're probably right.' He clicked his heels and took off again."

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

Nice airport. Most of Accra very walkable, especially Osu neighborhood. Get a guided tour for history of slave trade or wildlife safari.

Accra with its artistic flair and coastal location was quite pleasant. It's easy to see why so many fall in love with it quick.
