BELGIUM

HOME OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, NATO AND THE WORLD-LEADING BELGIAN CHOCOLATE

"My political background made seeing the traditional tourist sites low on the agenda. My inner nerd wanted to see the NATO headquarters and the buildings that housed the European Union. I had time for one and chose the latter. Way more technocratic than the U.S. Capitol and I found the EU to be symbolic of a cohesive Europe. Better to be bland and efficient rather to let one country's architecture rule the road."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Brussels
Visit the E.U. and gain first hand knowledge about how European tries for some semblance of universal governance.
Enjoy the Grand Palace and the Parc du Cinquantenaire.
Saying yes to every street vendor that offered me chocolate, well worth the cost.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

1/5  EASY

The de facto capital of Europe, it's easy to access and to navigate.

You don't need more than two days in Brussels to get a feel for the place, unless you're a political junkie, but it could take you two years to try and figure the complexities of E.U. policy.
