JORDAN

The mars-like red sands of the Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and amenable Amman make Jordan memorable.

"Once parked I moved out into the sands. I'd never seen the sun cast across stone in such a way. Like the streak left behind from a well soaked paint brush. As the sun fell from view, the red of the sky matched the red of the sand, there was little light pollution or noise, it was state of surreality. When dark came, I took a nip of whiskey I kept in my bag and walked out into the red sands. The stars danced across the sky, there was no light pollution to stifle their brilliant beauty brimming with bountiful brightness. Seventy yards from the camp, I found a cluster of low lying rocks to lean against. Jack Daniels on my tongue I inhaled the cool desert air. What stars above! Same as Joseph and Mary once saw, as did the Wise Men. I suppose I should have been scared, alone in the inhospitable frigid desert, but I felt more free. Those stars reminded me of everyone who I had lost, they were shining down, guiding my intentions."

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

Jordan is calm and soothing. Uber is easy to use inside of Amman. It's quite walkable too. Getting a proper tour of Petra or the Wadi Rum is a must. Some companies will combine experiences into one 36-hour trip.

The Wadi Rum feels like a prophetic place, as if you were meant to be there or perhaps you're returning even if you didn't know it. Maybe that's Jordan overall.
