CHILE

A chill place-pun intended

"The next day I enjoyed a long leisurely lunch in the artsy and colorful Bellavista neighborhood. Streets of outdoor cafes with seats piled next to each other, gave diners an unbroken sense of togetherness.  A barkeep was talkative and greatly interested in the story of my travels. When I pushed the conversation to how interesting I found the human rights museum, he became silent and pushed back towards my own story. I asked if he had gone, and he simply responded, “that’s personal for my family.” I pulled back."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Santiago
Valparaiso
Viña del Mar
Zapallar
Visit the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago.
A glass of wine in the Bellavista neighborhood.
Drive the cliffside beach road from Valparaiso to Zapallar then eat some scallops.
Being moved to tears inside the human rights museum, one of the finest representations of how quickly ruthless authoritarianism can creep into society.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

1/5  EASY

Probably the most accessible and efficient country in South America.

For what Santiago lacks in sexiness compared to Bueno Aires, Medellin, or Rio de Janeiro, it makes up for with its comfort and calm. The coastline not far from the city is worth a few days. Oh yeah, there's Chilean Patagonia and wine country too!
