SOUTH AFRICA

Apartheid, Mandela and the most industrialized

and technologically advanced country in Africa.

“'Please enter through the door that corresponds with your assigned race.' Those were the directions of the uniformed official at the Apartheid Museum, meant to convey a small sense of what life was like under the system, in place not so long ago. My ticket said “Non-White.” I found the “Non-White” door and walked inside. Once the tour group was divided arbitrarily, each entrance took a different route to the same exhibit, an explanation of how people under apartheid were categorized into “White” “Non-White” “Coloured” and “Asian.” This simple act of division resonated deeply. People I had just been standing next to, even chatting with, were removed from my vicinity in accordance with a system of control. Though curated for a museum, you could oddly feel the oppressiveness in the moment."

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

1/5  EASY

Very strong infrastructure, modern amenities abound this country with a complicated recent history.

Cape Town may be unmatched in its ability to captivate. There's a quiet tension in Johannesburg, despite apartheid being over, there's almost a hyper conscious security state that is tough to shake. Nevertheless, highly recommend taking advantage of the flights and roads and spending a week in country.
