"Route 1 delivers me and the pug 170 miles to the north. Way up into Aroostook County, the super-rural agricultural wonderland of Maine known to locals as “the County.” It’s the largest county by land area on the East Coast and one of the largest east of the Rockies. We drive by lakes and forests and then out into potato country, finally resting in Caribou—a former hub for fur trappers and timber cutters. The next day I decide to take a different way out to Jackman, Maine, in the western moose hunting country, via Fort Kent in the north near Canada. I want to challenge myself more, do something radical. Why not take an old logging road, get off the grid?"
