CAMBODIA

Enlightenment from the back of tuk-tuk

"The guide leads me through dozens of ancient ruins. Up old stairs constructed of worn-out sandstone, everything weathered, everything somehow very much alive. It must be that it’s a result of the trees growing into and out of the rock. A mix of nature’s eternal qualities and man’s eternal attempts to control it. Around each corner is a new treasure, something that defies logic: large faces made from stone protrude from a temple fence; an ancient gong in front of a wall of what looks like hieroglyphics. How could people create such grandiose beauty with such primitive tools."

Never enter a restaurant, live off of Siem Reap street food. Discover a Buddhist monastery.
Meditating with Buddhists monks at a temple.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

2/5  MODERATE

Fairly simple visa process. Siem Reap is very tourist oriented. Long haul to get to. Make sure you have air-conditioning.

Few places on earth evoke the feelings one gets upon visiting Angkor Wat, couple that with a bowl of Khmer noodles and you've won bigly.
