NICARAGUA

NICARAGUA

Emerging from conflict, kind and unspoiled

“I finished the cigarillo and extinguished the sparks on the mud near my bare feet. I gazed up at the outline of the volcano upon the hazy black sky, I could feel its combustive energy, at any moment it could shoot fire up into the darkness. Maybe that was all of us on the pig farm that night, young combustible souls ready to explode out into the world, aged three to thirty-one.”

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Matagalpa
Granada
Learn about the Nicaraguan Revolution.
Ometepe overnight stay
Surf in San Juan del Sur.
Fresh coffee in Matagalpa
Spending the night on a rural pig farm near a volcano.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

3/5  HARD

Lacks tourist infrastructure, combustible political situation and ever-present threat of protests.

The long periods of turmoil have left their mark but the country is slowly progressing to being a tourist favorite. It's the best place in the world to learn how to surf. Much of the mountainous green areas of the country have not been overdeveloped making them well worth a visit. It's wise not to forget America's role in Nicaraguan history that accounts for so much of what Nicaragua is today.
