SOLO TRAVEL

TRAVEL TIPS

WHY SOLO TRAVEL?

There's a simple reason—the time is yours.

It's cliche to say the most valuable gift you can give someone is your time—but it's true, especially as you age.

SOLO TRAVEL GIVES The GIFT OF TIME TO YOURSELF.

By traveling alone you are free to give all of yourself to the journey, the experience, to learning about some new place but most importantly—you.

Traveling on your own, you see things through a lens that’s uninfluenced by a friend, partner, family member etc. How do you see it? How do you feel it? When will you notice? How will you experience? The decision and the schedule is completely yours. You answer to your needs and wants. You do you.

SOLO TRAVEL IS NOT EASY.

You need to be comfortable sitting alone, whether on a bus, at a table, a bar, a cafe or perhaps the most difficult - your own thoughts. But once you do, the solo journey is incredibly rewarding.

Along your way, you meet people, often fellow wandering souls. You talk to others because they are the ones who are there. You are free to shed any pretense of your past, you are stripped down to your core. It’s not about being alone, it’s about being free.

While certain countries and their cultures place limitations on who can solo travel safely, everyone can solo travel somewhere if they choose. It's possible for everyone to experience the feeling somewhere. As travelers joke—there's always New Zealand! Perhaps the safest country to solo travel in the world.

SAFETY

KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU

COMMUNICATE STRATEGICALLY

Keeping your wits about you and staying on the well-lit path—literally and figuratively are a must. Watch out for yourself. Trust but verify—drinks, rides, experiences and people.
Be open and talkative but don't offer up all your information. A stranger does not need to know right away where you're staying or your full name. Being vague is not a crime.
"My blinking blue light is smack-dab in the middle of the Pacific. It takes a few thumb scrolls on my iPhone’s map to find the next nearest land mass. Easter Island is truly out there, in the best sense of the phrase. A tiny island, five-plus hours by plane, a week by boat, a place humans were never supposed to find. It hits me while the plane taxis to the gate. Nothing has felt this liberating."

In many parts of the world, women may face a more difficult experience than men when solo traveling. And still, some of the world’s most impressive solo travelers are women. Research your destination in advance and avoid precarious situations. However, the vast majority of people in the world are friendly and hospitable, especially to kind tourists.
  • Join up with tour groups and interact with your fellow visitors. Chat people up from different countries, inquire about their customs. Feel people out.
  • As a single on a tour, you’re usually paired up with another single for an activity, these temporary friendships are a nice break from the solitude.
  • Self-guided tours are great too, remember, the best part of solo-travel is to go at your own pace.
