GREECE

Don't let island hopping let you stop you from learning about the importance of 6th century BC Athenian Democracy!

"'How did you find me?'' I couldn't tell if the restauranteur in this interior part of Chios was kidding or seriously annoyed. His broken English was hard to decipher. The truth was I had passed the old village and it seemed authentic enough to stop at. 'I just drove by and stopped, I can leave if it's a problem.' He waved off the suggestion with his hand. 'I must feed you, sit sit.' After forty-five minutes, the man emerges with a steaming hot tray of braised goat and homemade spaghetti. There's a cold bottle of Greek beer to accompany it. 'This is all I had. Enjoy.' I did what he said."

CITIES VISITED:

MUST DO:

FAVORITE MEMORY:

Athens
Santorini
Mykonos
Naxos
Chios
In Athens, the Acropolis, Parthenon and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
Party in Mykonos.
Honeymoon in Santorini.
Live simply in Naxos.
Be a real Greek in Chios.
The tranquility of Naxos, whether swimming in the ocean or hiking in scalding hot valley of rock, it was never not calm and reassuring.

DIFFICULTY TO VISIT RATING:

1/5  EASY

More fun to ferry around the islands than it is to fly. Don't let the grit of Athens be concerning, it's a fun part of the vibe.

Greek culture is one of the most endearing in the world. Personally I could be dropped anywhere in the country and be content. That being said, a few days of history and learning in Athens and then hit the Aegean Sea, which legit has healing powers.
